Why should I have my forage analysed?

  • The majority of any horses’ diet should be based on forage and fibre. With this being the case, knowing the nutritional analysis of your horses grazing and/or forage (hay/haylage) can be helpful in determining their overall diet contributions.

Alongside this, testing your forage sources can also be helpful in determining whether these are a suitable source of fibre for your horse, whether it be a higher energy/protein forage required for a performance horse, or a lower calorie, lower sugar fibre source required for a horse prone to laminitis.

In addition to nutritional analyses, hygiene analyses can be important in determining the quality of your forage source; high mould and yeast counts could present a health challenge for your horse.

When should I analyse my forage?

  • We recommend getting your forage analysed whenever you change supply especially if you are particularly concerned about certain nutritional analyses. In the most part, testing a new supply or a new year/different field of hay/haylage is best practice.
  • The nutritional analysis of grazing changes considerably throughout the year, and due to this, hay and haylage can also vary depending on the time and in which conditions that they were cut.
