22nd January - Point-to-Point Owners’ and Riders’ Associations (PPORA) Novice Riders Series - Tiverton Foxhounds

The sun shone – at last - for the Tiverton Foxhounds annual Point-to-Point on Sunday 19 January at Chipley Park, near Wellington, Somerset.

However with the very wet weather that has prevailed in the West Country the conditions under foot and on the course were very wet and all credit is due to the organisers for managing to stage this important meeting in the Point-to-Point calendar.  A total of 108 runners contested 10 races providing quality racing on soft going.

Dodson & Horrell sponsored the 11 strong field of the Point-to-Point Owners’ and Riders’ Associations (PPORA) – Novice Riders Series one of twenty-two sponsored races in the Series.  The winner was Ciaran Gethings, riding Justabout, who is out of Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Dubacilla.  Riding a strong finish Ciaran beat Tamatown and Barneys Mate in a nail biting finish.

Justabout has won five times under rules but has had an easy time over the last two years.  He is trained and ridden at home by his 74 year old owner, Gerald Greenway.

In second place was Tamatown owned by Mrs Sue Trump and ridden by Mr A L Harvey.  Barneys Mate finished a close third, owned by Axe Valley Racing Club and ridden by Christopher Barber, grandson of local trainer Richard Barber.  Fourth place was taken by Footy Facts, owned by Peter Whittaker and ridden by Miss Lucy Jenkins.

This is the twenty-sixth year of Dodson & Horrell’s sponsorship in Point-to-Pointing and this Series goes from strength to strength.   The final being held at Tabley, Cheshire on the 19th May.
