The feeding of herbal supplements is becoming increasingly popular with horse owners as we try to replicate the way horses used to self-select herbs from hedgerows. This was before we managed their paddocks so tightly in order to maximise grazing. Dodson & Horrell’s Hedgerow Herbs are a dried blend of natural herbs designed to replicate the horse’s normal foraging behaviour in the wild. Hedgerow herbs are a blend of herbs, consisting of Nettle, Mint, Dandelion, Rosehips, Thyme, Oregano and Redclover. They are reputed to nutritionally support general wellbeing and condition.
Nettles are included for their reputation to support a healthy skin and a shiny coat - hence improving the appearance of dappling.
Mint is renowned as an appetiser for horses and as a beneficial effect on the digestive system. It is reputed to soothe the digestive tract. Horse owners add these herbs to fibre diets, to encourage appetite.
Dandelion is thought to support the urinary system.
Rosehips contain antioxidant properties that are useful for supporting a healthy body.
Thyme and Oregano -Thyme is a cousin in the mint family reputed to support the upper respiratory system. Oregano is another member of the mint family, and both contain phytonutrients.
Hedgerow herbs supplement is not designed to replace a full vitamin and mineral supplement, however it can be useful to help support the diet of horses, using naturally occurring plants that horses would naturally forage for. If your veterinarian determines that your horse needs additional vitamins and minerals always follow their advice.
